The power of love is timeless and ageless

By Herschelle Benjamin

Production: Mike & Mavis

With Elize Cawood and Wilson Dunster

Director: Gerrit Schoonhoven

Mike & Mavis is charming, funny and delightful, which makes it a must-see for all ages.

This romantic comedy will make you reconsider all those preconceived ideas about aging, romance and real true love. The power of love is timeless and ageless and overcomes all obstacles life might throw at us. It gives movies such as The Notebook and The Vow a run for their money, with the added bonus of a live experience.

Maybe you’re a sentimental old soul, or maybe you just believe in the magic of true love, either way this production will leave you hopeful and grateful that we get to experience love as the deepest and most valuable emotion that make the journey of life a lot more bearable.

There I was, laughing, smiling and aww-ing with a much more mature audience and for 60 minutes I got to meet Mavis, Mike, Mielies and Deidre, the travelling daughter of Mavis, who at 35 has had more relationships and break-ups than her mother had during her whole life!

Young actor and director Wessel Pretorius, who has built an career with both his writing of and critically nominated performances in Ont, Adam Twee and Klara Maas se hart is gebreek, wrote the text with an underlining deeper contextual empathy towards these much older characters.

Mavis (Elize Cawood) comes across as the loving, sweet, tough-love mother, and even though she is a widow her spark for life and her daughter’s WhatsApp messages will make you root for her to experience the love she was meant to have. Or the greater love she also deserves to experience at her age. Cawood makes Mavis real and human.

Played with nuance and charm, Wilson Dunster (Mike) is the perfect and compatible actor next to his real-life wife and fellow actress. Both are veterans and portray their characters with honesty, technical ease and comfort in embodiment.

The best thing about good acting is that it doesn’t need tricks. The staging is functional and visually pleasing and the props are minimal. The treat is the script and actors.

If you want to find out who Mielies is, want to experience how the actors make you feel nostalgic about an old love or hopeful about the prospect of a new love at a much older age, go and visit Mike and Mavis.
